Collaboration with Germany – FWF

Description

The programme supports bilateral and multilateral research collaborations between Austria and Germany, implemented through cooperation between the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) and the German Research Foundation (DFG). It provides funding opportunities for joint research projects and participation in larger collaborative research structures, enabling researchers to work across borders and combine complementary expertise.

Funding Amount

  • Per project:
    • Funding follows the rules of:
      • FWF Principal Investigator Projects
      • FWF Clinical Research
      • or other relevant programmes
  • Funding duration:
    • Up to 36 or 48 months, depending on the programme
  • Funding model:
    • Each national agency funds its own country’s participants

Submission Deadlines

  • Rolling submissions (no fixed deadline)
  • For Weave projects:
    • Submission must occur:
      • To the lead agency
      • To the partner agency within 7 days

Submission Conditions

  • Applications must be submitted via:
    • FWF elane portal
  • Additional submission requirement:
    • Must also be submitted to the partner funding agency (DFG)
  • Requirements depend on programme type:
    • Principal Investigator Projects or
    • Clinical Research programme guidelines apply
  • Key conditions:
    • Projects must be jointly developed and integrated
    • Must comply with both national funding rules
  • Evaluation:
    • Based on international peer review
    • Can follow either:
      • FWF procedures, or
      • DFG procedures (if DFG is lead agency)

  • Research-performing organisations

Expected Outcome

The programme aims to:

  • Promote high-quality international collaboration
  • Create scientific added value through cross-border cooperation
  • Enable pooling of expertise and resources between Austria and Germany

Scope

The programme supports several collaboration formats:

  • Bilateral Principal Investigator Projects (via the Weave network)
  • Participation in:
    • FWF Special Research Areas
    • DFG Collaborative Research Centres (Transregios)
    • DFG research groups

Projects must:

  • Be closely integrated across countries
  • Involve substantial scientific contributions from all partners
  • Potentially include a third country partner (for Weave projects)

The programme is:

  • Thematically open (all disciplines)
